Jonathan Reggler, a retired Vancouver Island family physician and active MAiD “provider”(Dr who poisons people to death), recently offered a moment of radical honesty in The Atlantic. Reflecting on his discomfort with Track 2 MAiD cases—those involving people who are not terminally ill—he explained how he resolves his moral unease and ill point out that this is how a killers talks.

In a well-resourced system with timely access to psychiatry, rehabilitation, chronic pain care, palliative medicine, and social supports, the autonomy argument is different. In our current system, autonomy is often exercised in the context of scarcity.
I had a quadriplegic patient referred from the Emergency Department. Instead of coordinated rehabilitation, specialist advocacy, and aggressive functional planning, the pathway he encountered included a MAiD referral. Orthopedics assessed him and suggested MAiD as an option, then disengaged.
He was not dying. He was not untreatable. He was complex. He required access, time, and coordinated care. The system could not deliver that. Death was easier to access than rehabilitation.
When a curable or manageable patient is offered MAiD because care is fragmented or inaccessible, that is not compassion. That is system failure dressed as choice.
We are drifting toward a model where MAiD functions as a pressure release valve for underfunding and dysfunction. It is faster to assess eligibility for death than to secure long-term rehab, psychiatric follow-up, housing, or chronic pain resources. That should alarm us.
Physicians are trained to restore function and relieve suffering. If our response to system barriers becomes medicalized death rather than aggressive advocacy for care, we are redefining our profession.
The debate should continue. But if we expand MAiD faster than we expand access to meaningful alternatives, we are not strengthening autonomy. We are narrowing it.
At some point, Canada needs to start being honest with ourselves.
Tommy Douglas, the "Father of Universal Healthcare" and one of Canada's most admired men does not deserve the adulation. In 1933, he received a Master of Arts in sociology from McMaster University for his thesis, “The Problems of the Subnormal Family.” In the thesis, Douglas recommended several eugenic policies, including the sterilization of “mental defectives and those incurably diseased.” His views were so repugnant, eventually he was pressured into disavowing such. That being said, I don't know of anyone's mind being changed by being forced to disavow.
So when Douglas cooperated with Lester Pearson in creating Universal Healthcare, I have no doubt Douglas expected eugenics would eventually become mainstream as a result. And we're there.
The fact Liberals continue to use euphemisms to pretend they're the good guys doesn't excuse the fact that "healthcare" including MAID is exclusively provincial jurisdiction. And provinces who don't defend their constituents from federal overreach are literally allowing their voters to be killed.
When you don't believe in God or that life is sacred, there are NO limitations. Anyone is now a target. You can see it in our legal system with the sentences that defy belief and the revolving door that never takes crime seriously.
MAID victims value lies in, the $$$ saved from true health treatment, the egos of Drs saved at their perceived helplessness of not finding a cure, and of course the easy money provided to the deathcare providers.

The federal liberal government has made it legal in Canada for Dr’s and nurses to openly kill patients and do this needs to stop and all involved need to be held accountable for genocide against the the Canadian people
These demented Drs and nurses have been practicing this for years by over dosing terminally ill patients with drugs like morphine and nobody probably even knew that they were doing it
Now they openly kill patients even when not terminal and are freaking proud of it like the crazy doctor in BC that proudly brags about MAIDing over 400 people
When will Canadians become outraged as they do when protesting for other causes

I never thought that the medical system would crash as it has or that doctors, who still swear to do no harm, are killing people instead of treating them.
I live with a disability, do not have a family doctor and have barely any access to the care I actually need. Every time I am in the ER I am fighting for my rights to treatment and watching and listening carefully to every word being spoken. I have been coerced into asking for MAiD three times so far and my firm NO, followed by ‘God put me in this world and He is the only One taking me out,” makes my wishes crystal clear.

If I am ever unconscious or unable to advocate for myself then that’s the cliff Kelsi has identified. It’s horrifying that this is reality and every single Canadian who is perfectly healthy physically and mentally now is one crisis or one diagnosis away from being squarely in MAiD practitioners crosshairs.
